Bolstering Treatment Accessibility and Capacity

Health Minister Kalumbi Shangula graced the donation ceremony with his presence, elaborating on the profound impact of Debmarine’s gift. Amid the unfolding health revolution, the minister shared the government’s commitment to fortify the fabric of public health by enhancing facilities available to the Namibian people. Shangula expressed confidence that the donated machines would push the healthcare system towards self-sufficiency by mitigating the necessity for patients to undertake lengthy journeys in search of dialysis treatment.

Following this donation, Shangula announced the impending completion of a 12-chair dialysis unit within the hospital. This development is poised to yield substantial cost savings for the government by diminishing referrals to private clinics and amplifying the ease of access to essential treatment for patients. The dramatic transformation of an old TB ward into this new life-sustaining dialysis center heralds a promising era that is just around the corner.

Impact and Statistics of Dialysis Treatment in Oshakati

Offering a glimpse into the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital’s recent track record, Minister Shangula highlighted that between April 2023 and April 2024, the hospital managed a total of 133 new haemodialysis cases. These resulted in 35 recoveries and 38 outpatient treatments. While 27 patients were referred to private centers due to capacity constraints, 30 unfortunately succumbed to diabetes-related complications—a somber statistic underscoring the urgent need for enhanced medical facilities.
