How Does Ohio’s Low Health Value Affect Its Residents?

April 17, 2024

Ohio’s struggle with its ranking as 44th in health value is more than just a statistic—it paints a picture of widespread health issues and costly medical care. The 2024 Health Value Dashboard from the Health Policy Institute of Ohio paints a stark picture of what needs to change. It’s a call to action for everyone, from lawmakers to residents, to build a more equitable healthcare system, and its findings guide efforts to improve health for all Ohioans.

Mental Health Challenges Among LGBTQ+ Youth

Ohio’s LGBTQ+ youth are facing a mental health crisis, with alarmingly high rates of suicide and attempts. Restrictive laws that deny them gender-affirming care or regulate bathroom use only add to their struggles. Improving Ohio’s health means addressing these youths’ needs through better access to mental health services and reconsidering harmful policies.

Racial Disparities in Healthcare

Racial disparities in healthcare are especially pronounced for Black Ohioans, who are 13.7 times more likely to receive unequal care compared to white residents. Likewise, Asian and Hispanic/Latino communities face higher levels of discrimination. To boost the state’s health value, systemic barriers that enable racial inequality must be dismantled.

Food Insecurity and Health

Food insecurity affects many in Ohio, particularly low-income and Black households, and is rooted in longstanding societal issues. Addressing food insecurity through programs like WIC and the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program can improve Ohioans’ health. Addressing the root causes of food access inequity is crucial for a healthier state.

Advancements and Improvements in Ohio’s Healthcare

Despite challenges, Ohio’s healthcare system is improving, notably in primary care and maternal health. A declining uninsured rate points to greater access to healthcare. These advancements provide a foundation for further progress and a healthier Ohio.

Strategic Recommendations for a Healthier Ohio

A comprehensive plan is needed for a healthier Ohio, tackling everything from provider availability to preventive care and mental health resources. A collective effort is required to build an equitable health system. The recommendations from the Health Value Dashboard pave the way for improved health throughout the state.
