Trump’s Medicaid Policy Faces Another Big Loss Saturday in Louisiana

A runoff election Saturday in Louisiana for the state’s governorship could thwart Republican efforts to curtail the expansion of Medicaid health benefits under the Affordable Care Act.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat elected in 2015, enacted Medicaid expansion and more than 500,000 poor in the state gained health insurance coverage during his term.

But Edwards Republican opponent, Eddie Rispone, has said he would “freeze” the number of Louisiana residents who could sign up for coverage and supporters of Medicaid expansion worry he will roll back health insurance gains in the state.
