Levothyroxine treatment didn’t have an impact on depressive symptoms in older people, researchers reported.

In an ancillary study of the TRUST trial, mean depressive symptoms scores were similar after a year between older adults (mean age 74.52) on levothyroxine versus those on placebo, reported Nicolas Rodondi, MD, of the University of Bern in Switzerland, and colleagues in JAMA Network Open.

Symptoms were measured with the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), with a score of 3 or higher indicating depression, and after 12 months, older adults on levothyroxine had a mean GDS-15 score of 1.39 versus a mean score of 1.07 in the placebo group (adjusted between-group difference 0.15, 95% CI -0.15 to 0.46, P=0.33).
