When they set out to study local levels of death from liver diseases in the U.S., University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Emory researchers found significant differences in death rates even within the same state, according to a recently published study in Gastroenterology.
And more than 60% of the variability in death from cirrhosis, liver cancer and other liver diseases could be explained by race/ethnicity, poverty, uninsured rates, distance to the closest transplant center, as well as local rates of obesity, diabetes and alcohol use.
