Nanoparticle Coating Could Stop Plaque Forming On Teeth

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth colonizing the tooth surface and forming something called a biofilm, which is very hard to get rid of and is what dental plaque consists of. These bacteria live on sugar, so the more we eat the more active they get.

Bacteria take time to form these sticky colonies and so they can be avoided if we regularly brush our teeth properly, but still almost half the adult global population has tooth decay or fillings as a result of decay. In the US, figures range from 16-32% depending on age, with children and young people having lower levels of tooth decay than older people.
